Energy
Energy consumption is essential for people’s everyday life, industry and all the other segments of the society. Energy demand constantly grows on global, regional and national level. This refers on electricity and energy for heating and cooling, but also on energy used in transport sector. The current world energy production is based on using of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) and nuclear energy. Because of this, the energy sector occurs as a major pollutant of the environment, from emissions of carbon dioxide, the main factor for global warming, till the radioactive waste from the nuclear power plants. Besides the negative effects the energy sector causes in the environment and on the people’s health, usage of oil and gas has also economical consequences due to the constant growth of their prices. These energy sources are motive for wars and political manipulations for many decades. In this moment, the world stands on the point, from which the current energy practices must be changed as soon as possible. It is necessary energy efficiency measures to be put on place, in the production, transmission and distribution of energy, as well as in industry and domestic end-use of energy. This will result in stabilization of the fast energy demand. On the other hand, utility percentage of the renewable energy sources (solar, wind energy, energy from biomass etc.) must be increased, which will result with increased percentage of the renewable energy sources in the energy balance. In this way, energy needs of the world population will be satisfied, economy development in the developing countries will not be obstructed, but also pollution of the environment will be stopped. Green house gas emissions will be stabilized and consequently the further global warming will be prevented. New amounts of radioactive waste, for which there is no final solution for storage and which remains potential hazard risk for many hundreds of thousands of years, will not be generated any more. In its work, Eco-sense lobbies international financial institutions for financing renewable and energy efficiency projects; conducts research on the potentials for renewable energy use and energy efficiency in Macedonia; and campaigns against large destructive energy projects such as the nuclear plant Belene in Bulgaria and AMBO pipeline. Eco-sense collaborates with the partner NGOs from the Balkan region and Central and Eastern Europe in order to achieve its goals in its work on energy issues. |
